Aditi | Vedic Goddess, Mother of Gods & Cosmic Order

Aditi is associated with maternal and cosmic energy, representing the boundless and infinite nature.

Origin

अ (a) - not + दिति (diti) - bound; limitless, boundless.

Description

In Hindu mythology, Aditi is the personification of the infinite during the Vedic phase. She is the mother of the celestial deities, the Adityas, and is considered a primeval goddess. Aditi supports the sky, sustains all existence, and nourishes the earth. Often represented as a cow, she is the mother of many gods, including Vishnu and Krishna in different incarnations. The Adityas, her sons, uphold divine order (rita), and their number and identity vary in different hymns. The term is sometimes extended to include all the gods. In later periods, their number is increased to 12, corresponding to the 12 solar months of the year. Aditya in the singular form is a name of the sun.
