कूर्म (kurma) - tortoise.
In Hinduism, Kurma is one of the 10 avatars of the god Vishnu. Associated with the churning of the ocean of milk, Kurma took the form of a tortoise to support Mount Mandara, used as a churning stick, on his back. This churning aimed to obtain amrita, the elixir of immortality. Depicted in painting and sculpture with a mixed human-animal form, Kurma's human half wears Vishnu's usual ornaments and holds the same weapons.
