Description

Skanda, also called Karttikeya, Kumara, or Subrahmanya, is the Hindu god of war and the firstborn son of Shiva. Legends surrounding Skanda's birth vary, but many stories involve his birth to destroy the demon Taraka. He is reared by the Krittikas and is sometimes known as Karttikeya, meaning "Son of Krittikas." Skanda is depicted with either six heads or one, often holding a spear or bow and arrows, and is associated with his mount, the peacock. In South India, he is known as Murugan before merging with the North Indian Skanda.
