Hanuman Chalisa
Origin
षष्ठी (shashthi) - sixth; associated with fertility and childbirth.
Description
Shashthi, the goddess of vegetation, reproduction, and infant welfare in Hinduism, is particularly venerated in eastern India, especially Bengal and Odisha. The name Shashthi means "the sixth," referring to the sixth day after childbirth, a critical period for the child and mother. Worship is offered to Shashthi on this day and the sixth day of the lunar fortnight. Literary works known as Shashthi-mangal celebrate her exploits and majesty.
