Hanuman Chalisa
Origin
हरि (hari) - Vishnu + हर (hara) - Shiva; Combined form of Vishnu and Shiva.
Description
In Hinduism, Harihara is a deity that merges the aspects of the two major gods, Vishnu (Hari) and Shiva (Hara). Images of Harihara, also known as Shambhu-Vishnu and Shankara-Narayana, started appearing in the classical period of Hinduism after sectarian movements that emphasized the supremacy of one god over others had subsided. The dual form of Harihara, showing the right half as Shiva and the left half as Vishnu, found favor in Cambodia, with inscriptions and images dating back to the 6th–7th century. This synthesis represents a compromise between followers of Vishnu and Shiva during a period of religious transition.
