Description
Saptamatrika, meaning "Seven Mothers," is a group of seven mother-goddesses in Hinduism, each representing the shakti of a god. The goddesses include Brahmani, Maheshvari, Kaumari, Vaishnavi, Varahi, Indrani, and Chamunda. Some texts mention Yogeshvari as an eighth. Shrines devoted to Saptamatrika often depict them flanked by Virabhadra and Ganesha. The individual mothers can be identified by their attributes corresponding to their male counterparts. Devotion to Saptamatrika may have existed before the 11th century.
