Hanuman Chalisa
Origin
इन्द्र (indra) - possibly meaning "possessing drops of rain" or "splendid."
Description
In Hindu mythology, Indra is the king of the gods, prominently featured in the Rigveda. He is a warrior deity associated with the thunderbolt, rain, and the east. As the king of the gods, Indra leads cattle raids against the dasas or dasyus, the native inhabitants of the lands over which his people roam. He is a central figure in the struggle against anti-gods or asuras, including the famous battle against the dragon Vritra, a leader of the dasas and a demon of drought. Indra is strengthened by drinks of the elixir of immortality, the soma, offered to him in sacrifices. In later Hinduism, Indra is no longer worshipped but retains important mythological roles as the god of rain, regent of the heavens, and guardian of the east. Stories in the Mahabharata and Puranas depict his interactions with other gods, including his attempts to prevent Agni, the god of fire, from burning a great forest. In some stories, Indra fathers the hero Arjuna.
