Agni

Hindu God

Agni | Vedic Deity, Fire God, Hinduism

Agni's power lies in the control of fire, symbolizing transformation, purification, and the conduit between humans and the divine.

Origin

अग्नि (agni) - fire.

Description

In Hinduism, Agni is the fire-god, second only to Indra in Vedic mythology. He represents the fire of the sun, lightning, domestic hearth, and sacrificial fires. Agni is the divine personification of the fire of sacrifice, serving as the mouth of the gods, the carrier of oblations, and the messenger between the human and divine realms. Descriptions of Agni include ruddy hue, two faces (beneficent and malignant), three or seven tongues, flame-like hair, three legs, and seven arms. He is often accompanied by a ram, the sacrificial animal. In the Rigveda, he is occasionally identified with Rudra, a forerunner of Shiva. Despite not having a dedicated sect in modern Hinduism, Agni is invoked in various ceremonies, particularly by Agnihotri Brahmans.
