बृहत् (brihat) - great + पति (pati) - lord; Great Lord or Teacher.
In Vedic mythology, Brihaspati is the preceptor of the gods, master of sacred wisdom, charms, hymns, and rites. He serves as the sage counselor of Indra in his battles against the titans or asuras. Brihaspati is associated with the heavenly prototype of Brahmans and earthly purohita, or family priest. He is attributed a hymn in the Rigveda and is also the regent of the planet Jupiter.
