Trimurti | Definition, Meaning, & Facts

The Trimurti collectively possesses the cosmic powers of creation (Brahma), preservation (Vishnu), and destruction (Shiva) in Hindu theology.

Origin

त्रि (Tri) - three + मूर्ति (Murti) - form; The trinity of Brahma, Vishnu, and Shiva.

Description

The trimurti in Hinduism represents the triad of the three gods Brahma, Vishnu, and Shiva. This concept, known by the time of Kalidasa's poem Kumarasambhava, collapses the three gods into a single form with three faces. Each deity has a specific role in creation, with Brahma as the creator, Vishnu as the preserver, and Shiva as the destroyer. However, the trimurti doctrine simplifies the diverse roles of Vishnu and Shiva. While Vishnu and Shiva are widely worshipped, few temples are dedicated to Brahma. Scholars see the trimurti as an attempt to reconcile different approaches to the divine and the philosophical doctrine of ultimate reality (brahman).
