सु (Su) - good + रि (ri) - to move or to go; The sun as the good mover.
Surya is both the Sun and the Sun god in Hinduism. While several deities in the Vedic period had solar characteristics, Surya became the sole Sun god in later Hinduism. Worship of Surya is particularly significant in the Saura sect. Surya is invoked daily by many Hindus through the Gayatri mantra. Mythologically, Surya is the father of notable sons like Manu, Yama, the Ashvins, Karna, and Sugriva. Surya's power is associated with dispelling darkness, curing disease, and illuminating the world. Sculptures often depict Surya in a chariot drawn by seven horses or a single horse with seven heads. Notable temples dedicated to Surya include the Sun Temple at Konark.
