Hanuman Chalisa
Origin
लक्ष्मी (lakshmi) - goal; fortune.
Description
Lakshmi, the Hindu goddess of wealth and good fortune, is the wife of Vishnu. She takes on various forms to accompany him in each of his incarnations. Lakshmi's origin from the churning of the ocean of milk sparked a dispute between gods and demons over possession. In sculptural representations where she is seated on a lotus, Lakshmi is portrayed as gracefully adorned, radiating a benevolent smile, and at times depicted with elephants ceremoniously pouring water over her. She is worshiped by contemporary Hindus and holds significance in Jainism as well.
