Jagannatha

Hindu God

Jagannatha | Ratha Yatra, Puri, India

Jagannatha is revered for the power of universal lordship, symbolizing the cosmic ruler and the Lord of the Universe.

Origin

जगत् (jagat) - world + नाथ (natha) - lord; Lord of the Universe.

Description

Jagannatha is the form under which the Hindu god Krishna is worshipped at Puri, Odisha, and at Ballabhpur, a suburb of Shrirampur, West Bengal. The 12th-century temple of Jagannatha in Puri is a prominent landmark. Wooden images in the temple represent Jagannatha, his brother Balabhadra (Balarama), and his sister Subhadra. In modern representations of the 10 avatars of Vishnu, Jagannatha is sometimes included instead of Buddha. The most significant festival is the Chariot Festival (Rathayatra), which takes place in June–July. During this festival, the image of Jagannatha is placed in a heavy chariot and pulled through deep sand to his country house. The festival involves the participation of thousands of pilgrims. The English word "juggernaut," with connotations of an unstoppable force, is derived from this festival.
