Varaha | Avatar, Boar & Vishnu

Varaha's power is the rescue of the earth from the demon Hiranyaksha by lifting it out of the sea, symbolizing divine intervention and protection.

Origin

वराह (Varāha) - boar; The boar form taken by Vishnu in this avatar.

Description

Varaha is the third incarnation of Vishnu, appearing as a boar. When the demon Hiranyaksha dragged the earth to the sea's bottom, Vishnu transformed into Varaha to rescue it. After a thousand years of battle, Varaha slew the demon and lifted the earth with his tusks. Varaha is represented in art as a full animal or a human with a boar's head. Sculptures may show him as a colossal boar with the earth personified as the goddess Bhumidevi clinging to one tusk, or as half-human, half-animal supporting Bhumidevi.
