Description

In Hindu and Buddhist mythology, Lokapāla refers to the guardians of the four cardinal directions. Hindu protectors include Indra, Yama, Varuṇa, and Kubera. The Buddhist lokapālas are Dhṛtarāṣṭra, Virūḍhaka, and Virūpākṣa. These deities play essential roles in significant events of the Buddha's life. Represented fully armed, standing on demons, they are associated with different seasons and elements.
