Description
Vishnu, a principal Hindu deity, embodies many divine figures and local heroes through avatars, including Rama and Krishna. Vishnu, with ten primary avatars called the Dashavatara, manifests himself when needed to fight evil and protect dharma. Vishnu's vahana is the eagle Garuda, and his heaven is Vaikuntha. Temple images depict him sitting or reclining on the cosmic ocean. He is represented with various symbols in his hands, and paintings usually portray him as dark-complexioned.
