Hanuman Chalisa
Origin
Associated with "yam" - to restrain or to control; Controller of the afterlife.
Description
Yama, the god of the dead in Indian mythology, is described in the Vedas as the first mortal, blazing the path of mortality for all humans. As the guardian of the south and the realm of the dead, Yama oversees their resting place under the earth. Initially depicted as a cheerful king of departed ancestors, later mythology presents Yama as the just judge (Dharmaraja) weighing the deeds of the dead for retribution. Yama's appearance is majestic, often portrayed as green or black, with red eyes and garments, carrying a noose and mace, and riding a buffalo.
